I bought my first watch when I was 14 years old in 1963. I was a professional drummer and making 10.00 a night. I went in a pawn shop in Charleston W.VA.. I paid $35.00 for a 21 jewel B.W. Raymond. That started the bug.
I joined a Las Vegas show band after the Viet Nam War, and found myself traveling the country. That made it easy to buy more watches.I worked my way to a top recording band in Canada in 1975. We traveled all of Canada for four years and I continued to collect watches. The watches were not so popular in Canada and it made good pickings for the drummer.
I found out about the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and joined in 1976. In 1980 I retired from the music business and continued to make a living in the watch business. I have been associated with Tom Engle since I joined the N.A.W.C.C. That 35 dollar B.W.Raymond has grown since 1963 to $450.00. I wish I would have held on to it.
